Generation Opportunity has joined a coalition of more than 30 national organizations urging the White House to end special treatment for Congress under Obamacare.
“We urge you to direct the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) to rescind the Obama-era rule (78 Fed. Reg. 60653-01) that allows Congress to masquerade as a small business in order to force taxpayers to pay for their health insurance,” the coalition wrote in a letter to President Trump.
The letter outlines opposition to special treatment for Congress under Obamacare. Members of Congress and their staff are supposed to live under the requirements Obamacare. However, under President Obama’s direction, the Office of Personnel Management proposed a rule that allows the federal government to continue to pay for part of insurance premiums when members of Congress and their staff enroll in the new health insurance exchanges. This unfair rule gives special treatment to members of Congress and their staff that everyday Americans don’t get.
“When Congress was debating Obamacare, the American people demanded that Congress subject themselves and their staff to the new system they were imposing on their fellow American…Fortunately, you have the power to end the scheme by directing OPM to rescind the Obama rule and issue a new rule that conforms to the statutory requirement the Congress and their staff pay their own premiums in the individuals Obamacare exchange.”
