Last night, President Trump nominated Judge Neil Gorsuch to the U.S. Supreme Court. If confirmed, Gorsuch would fill the vacancy left by the passing of Justice Antonin Scalia one year ago this month.
During his ten years on the bench, Judge Gorsuch garnered a reputation for being a strong defender of the rule of law and an unwavering protector of our United States Constitution. Rather than legislate from the bench, which has become all too common in our era of judicial activism, Gorsuch has a strong record of adhering to the Constitution and applying statutes as they are written, and not as they could be interpreted.
Demonstrating his commitment to the original intent of our nation’s founding documents, Judge Gorsuch once wrote, “a judge who likes every result he reaches is very likely a bad judge, reaching for results he prefers rather than those the law compels.”
This profound statement reflects the judicial restraint Gorsuch has demonstrated by putting the rule of law before his own personal biases or political preferences. He has expressed concern that too many laws limit freedom and equality, which means his approach, if confirmed, will rein in zealous lawmaking that results in over-regulation and over-criminalization.
Generation Opportunity is proud to put our support behind Judge Neil Gorsuch, and we are excited to see him lend a unique and principled perspective to the highest court in the country.
